What Is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome, representing a class of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs). Discovered in 2015, it has been described as an exercise mimetic because it activates many of the same metabolic pathways triggered by physical exercise.

Mechanism of Action

MOTS-c primarily works through AMPK activation, the metabolic master switch that coordinates cellular responses to energy stress. When activated, AMPK triggers increased glucose uptake, enhanced fatty acid oxidation, inhibition of lipogenesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, and improved insulin sensitivity.
